Central Heating / Hot Water Cylinders Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between an unvented "pressurised" and vented cylinder?

The difference is that an unvented hot water cylinder is fed directly by the cold water mains and offers much better pressure & flow rates improving the performance of your taps, shower and bath. A vented cylinder (“traditional”) uses a cold water storage cistern to gravity feed the cylinder giving lower pressure & flow rates to your taps.

Do unvented hot water cylinders require cold water storage cistern in the loft?

No, Unvented cylinders don’t require a cold water storage tank as they work of the mains feed, so there is no need to have a cold water cistern in the loft.

Do unvented cylinders need maintenance?

Yes, because it is a pressurised system and has safety devices, it is important to have them serviced annually by a competent and qualified G3 plumber.

Can anyone install an unvented hot water cylinder?
No, Unvented hot water cylinders must be installed by a competent and qualified G3 plumber, as this is a legal requirement in the UK and all installations must be certified and registered with building control.
